Recent and ongoing projects

Mission:

The La Granja Social Fund (LGSF) has been created as part of a Private Investment Agreement signed between Rio Tinto and the Peruvian State in 2008, with the objective of financing and executing social projects to benefit the population settled in the area of influence of the La Granja Mining Project (District of Querocoto, Province of Chota, Cajamarca). Rio Tinto is currently evaluating the future of the La Granja Mining Project, which will be handed over to the State or to another company for exploitation. In this context and considering the social value of the LGSF, Rio Tinto identified the need to establish a plan to consolidate the fund, which will allow for the strengthening of its governance system, as well as its administrative and projects management. Rio Tinto thus commissioned Insuco to provide technical assistance in the first phase of the consolidation process of the LGSF.

Insuco implemented the following activities:

• Identification of relevant actors for the LGSF and analysis of their expectations and positions regarding the operation of the fund;
• Facilitation of a workshop with the Rio Tinto team, where the following issues were addressed: (i) SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of the LGSF, (ii) long-terme vision of the LGSF, (iii) role of Rio Tinto in the current context, (iv) analysis of stakeholders, (v) risks faced by the LGSF;
• Analysis of results, development of tools such as stakeholder mapping and risk matrix, short and medium term action plans for strengthening the LGSF.

Results:

The following deliverables were provided to the client:

• Identification of the key actors of the La Granja Mining Project and Social Fund (LGSF);
• Risk map of the La Granja Mining Project with focus on the LGSF;
• Map of strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats of the LGSF;
• Short and medium term action plan for strengthening the LGSF.
