Conducting a study to redefine cumulative impacts, a study to safeguard arable land and a study to restore plateaus after exploitation in the GAC mining concession - Guinea

Client: Global Alumina Corporation (GAC)
Region / Country: Africa | Guinea
Sectors: Mining
Services: Studies

Mission:

As some mines are coming to the end of their exploitation, the question of land restitution is being raised acutely. But what procedure allows the avoidance of high-value land and the restitution of quarries to be integrated into the land acquisition framework? The avoidance of high-value land and the restitution of quarries are still in gestation in the Guinean mining sector. It is in this context that GAC called on Insuco to provide technical assistance and to push the reflection with the Insuco teams, in compliance with national and international standards and principles. GAC now has the highest standards in terms of land protection, compliance with procedures and good environmental, social and sustainable development practices for future generations.

Results:

As part of this mission, Insuco Guinea developed:

  • Interviews, consultations and focus groups with communities on land restitution and possible existing rehabilitation actions;
  • An analysis and redefinition of the cumulative impacts of the GAC project with recommendations for the avoidance and reduction of negative impacts and the valorization of positive impacts;
  • A procedure note for land use and avoidance of High Agricultural Value (HVA) lands, integrating HVA land mapping;
  • A land restoration and restitution procedure including an inventory of land restoration and restitution after mining.
