Monitoring mission on the E&S aspects of the « Global TEA » project led in Malawi and Kenya and dealing in coffee and macadamia nut production and transformation, and in tea bagging for Proparco
Mission:
Global Tea and Commodities Ltd, a British company, operates in Malawi and Kenya, producing and processing coffee and macadamia nuts, as well as bagging tea.
In 2020, Global Tea and Commodities Ltd requested a due diligence process in view of a potential investment from Proparco, IFU and Si-Ad. This process included an environmental and social audit which led to the production and implementation of an Environmental and Social Action Plan and an ESMP. These plans are currently being implemented.
Proparco commissioned Insuco to take another look at the implementation of the ESAP. The work consisted in assessing the activities and progress made in implementing the plan, as well as identifying the main points of vigilance and the challenges faced by the various sites. More specifically, the mission was to reflect on the main E&S risks of the project, the actions implemented to limit them, and other recommendations for carrying out risk management. The study was designed as a constructive approach to minimising common risks by aligning with environmental and safety standards.
The mission consisted of :
- Provide advice to Proparco on the compliance of the plans with their social and environmental standards, and opportunities for improvement;
- Consolidate the international aspects of Proparco’s standards. This was achieved through close collaboration with national consultants, in which national and international experts strengthened their respective expertise.
Results:
Insuco has produced the following deliverables:
- Pre-mission report: Review and initial assessment of existing documents and the main E&S risks of the project, Programme and timetable of the field mission, Data collection tools
- Final mission report: Main conclusions, Points to watch, Urgent actions to be implemented + Recommendations on action plans
