Diamond chain value study in Banankoro area and brief assessment of the chain value in Kindia

Client : AWDC / Cap Conseil

Mission:

AWDC is the umbrella organization for Antwerp diamond dealers. With the support of Cap Conseil, a Belgian sustainable development consulting firm, AWDC aims to develop a “fair trade/ethical” diamond sector in the Republic of Guinea, of artisanal or non-industrial origin. AWDC and Cap Conseil wish to carry out this project in such a way that it is adapted to the local context, generates a positive impact, as well as complies with the Kimberley Process, the OECD guidelines and the duty of vigilance regarding responsible supply chains of minerals from conflict or so-called high risk areas.

After a first exploratory mission in December 2018, Cap Conseil commissioned Insuco to produce a monograph on the diamond sector in the Banankoro sub-prefecture and a brief analysis of the situation of the diamond sector in the Kindia area, with a focus on artisanal, small-scale and even semi-industrial diamond activity. The results will be a decision-making tool for Cap Conseil regarding its project (relevance of the choice of the intervention area, expectations and needs in terms of community development, understanding of the structure and organization of the sector, etc.).

First, Insuco realized a literature review on the geographic and institutional context of the area. Then Insuco organized a field mission to conduct interviews and consultations with key stakeholders involved in diamond exploitation.

Results:

The following deliverables have been submitted to the client:

  • A monograph on the diamond sector in Banankoro area;
  • A brief analysis of the situation of the Kindia diamond areas;
  • The minutes of meetings and interviews;
  • All the tools used to conduct the field mission.
