Insuco and its partners conducted an Environmental and Social Strategic Assessment of transport sector reform in Dominican Republic
The transport sector in the Dominican Republic faces multiple challenges. To improve the dysfunctions, the Dominican government enacted in 2017 a reform through Law 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transport, Transit and Road Safety. This law provides for the merger of the six (6) pre-existing institutions into a single institution, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT), under the Ministry of Public Works and Communications.
Thus, the recognition of the importance of the environmental and social risks generally associated with the transport sector led the Dominican government to request support for the implementation of this reform program from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), through Policy Based Loans (PBL). In this framework, Insuco, in collaboration with Setec and Biotope, carried out an Environmental and Social Strategic Assessment of the transport sector reform in the Dominican Republic, together with five (5) institutional capacity building sessions for the INTRANT and other key stakeholders. The initiative was funded by the AFD.
On 26 November 2020, a participatory workshop was held at the Intercontinental Hotel with various types of key stakeholders of the sector. And finally, on Monday 12 July 2021, we presented the final results of the project to the INTRANT.
